Knee Surgeon Staffordshire

When knee pain limits your movement, finding the right surgical intervention helps you regain your independence.

Whether you are struggling to walk the dog, climb stairs or sleep through the night, a clear diagnosis is the first step towards recovery. Ignoring joint deterioration can lead to pain in your back or your other leg.

Mr Ashley Costin-Brown is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Staffordshire patients can choose. He specialises in knee and hip conditions. Working through ACB Orthopaedics, he provides evidence-based assessments to determine the exact cause of your joint pain and formulate a precise treatment plan tailored to your lifestyle.

Knee Surgery and Treatment Options

Knee pain stems from various causes, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and sports injuries. Mr Costin-Brown offers a range of procedures to address your specific symptoms.
Total Knee Replacement
When arthritis damages the entire joint, a total knee replacement replaces the worn cartilage and bone surfaces with artificial components. This surgery aims to relieve severe pain and restore structural function. Mr Costin-Brown uses proven implant designs and computer-assisted techniques when appropriate to ensure accurate alignment.
Partial Knee Replacement
If your arthritis is confined to just one compartment of your knee, you may qualify for a partial replacement. This procedure retains your healthy bone and intact ligaments. Recovery is often quicker than a total replacement, and the joint typically feels more natural when walking.
Revision Knee Surgery
Artificial joints can loosen or wear out over time. If you have an existing knee replacement that is failing, Mr Costin-Brown performs revision surgery to remove the old implant and replace it with new components. This complex procedure restores joint stability and reduces pain.
Knee Arthroscopy
Knee Arthroscopy
This is a keyhole surgery used to diagnose and treat internal knee problems. Using a small camera and specialised instruments, Mr Costin-Brown can repair or remove torn meniscal cartilage, wash out loose bone fragments and smooth damaged joint surfaces. This minimally invasive approach typically involves two small incisions, allowing for a much faster recovery period than open surgery.
Non-Surgical Injections
Surgery is not your only option. If you are not ready for a joint replacement, you can explore injection therapies. These include traditional steroid injections to reduce inflammation and Arthrosamid, a permanent hydrogel injected into the joint capsule to cushion the knee and provide long-lasting relief.

Clinical Training and Qualifications

Mr Costin-Brown graduated with Honours from the University of Glasgow. He completed his core surgical training at major trauma centres across London before undertaking specialist orthopaedic training on the Oswestry-Stoke rotation.

During his examinations for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, he received the Sir Walter Mercer medal for achieving the highest score of any candidate in the UK that year. Following his UK training, he travelled to Toronto, Canada, to complete a lower limb arthroplasty fellowship at the Sunnybrook Holland Centre, focusing on complex joint replacements. He currently holds a full-time NHS consultant post at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust.
